On July 7, 2016, Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed and fired upon a group of police officers in Dallas, Texas, killing five officers and injuring nine others. Two civilians were also wounded. Johnson was an Army Reserve Afghan War veteran who was reportedly angry over police shootings of black men and stated that he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers. The shooting happened at the end of a peaceful protest against police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, which had occurred in the preceding days.
Following the shooting, Johnson fled inside a building on the campus of El Centro College. Police followed him there, and a standoff ensued. In the early hours of July 8, police killed Johnson with a bomb attached to a remote control bomb disposal robot. It was the first time U.S. law enforcement used a robot to kill a suspect.

NEWARK — A city man has been charged with a fatal shooting outside a fast food restaurant earlier this month.
Michael James Jr., 32, has been charged with the murder of 33-year-old Napoleon Williams, along with weapons possession charges, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable said in a statement.
Williams was found outside the Jersey Fried Chicken restaurant at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and West Peddie Street in the city’s South Ward just after 2 a.m. on Sept. 6. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another man was also found suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene, but was taken to a nearby hospital and survived, authorities said.
The murder was the second in the city in a span of approximately four hours that night.
“Today’s arrest was the result of an extensive investigation that required a lot of man hours and sacrifices on the part of the several police agencies involved,” he said. “However, it’s this type of joint cooperation that eventually leads to the capture of dangerous criminals like James.”

To all the good folks at Newark -- I am a retired electrical engineer [77 years old], that had a flood of memories return when I saw the Newark ad on the inside of the front cover of the Feb. 2016 issue of IEEE Spectrum. It says "Engineers Start Here" [at Newark, of course]. This was literally true for me.
In 1954, while a junior in high school in Bensenville, Illinois, I saw an article in Popular Science magazine about building a two-transistor radio. With encouragement of my uncle, who gave me his VOM to use, and a plastic cigarette holder for a soft pack, I rode the Milwaukee Road train to the Chicago loop, then walked to the Newark store on Madison St.
Even though I was a young kid, the countermen were very patient and helpful in providing the tools and parts I needed for the project.
I bought Klein pliers and cutters [I still have them], two screwdrivers, and a set of Swiss needle files [I still have them in the original box with the Newark stock label still there, Newark No. 14F5127]. I bought two CK722 transistors, some small electrolytics, some resistors, some 1/2 watt and 1/4 watt resistors, a tiny knob and potentiometer volume control, a ferrite-slug "loopstick" antenna unit, and a Telex earpiece receiver.
I built the regenerative AM radio receiver, and I got it to work! I even took it to school to show off [carefully in an outside school building demo, and just to look at in study hall] and impressed my classmates with the first "transistor radio" they had seen.
For me this sparked my interest in electronics and my decision to become an electrical engineer, thanks to my uncle and the good help of Newark! After my BSEE and MSE-EE, in the 1960's and 1970's, I worked at a company [now gone] in West Allis, Wisconsin, and then at a research institute in Chicago. In those years, I placed many requisitions to Newark for parts needed for development projects. In the 1980's through to 2005, I was in engineering and technical activities that did not require purchase of parts from Newark, and I missed that part of my life.
I have Newark to thank for getting me started, and for meeting my needs through the years when I needed Newark, Newark was there. I hope that Newark will continue into the 21st century to inspire more young engineers, and to supply their needs for at least another 66 years and more!
